Best Yoga Poses For Better Posture

You’re starting to feel an aching pain in your back or neck, or there is an unpleasant sharpness between your shoulder blades, chances are poor posture has been negatively affecting your spine. Keeping your posture unchecked can lead to some nasty consequences in the long run, like a pronounced hunch back, or – on the medical side of things – osteoporosis. When you’re stuck leaning forward to look at a computer for work, or sprawled out in weird positions on the couch, it’s easy to fall back into the traps the lead to poor posture in the first place. Tasadana, The Mountain Pose

If you were to look at a photo of someone doing this yoga pose, you would see someone standing and looking very serious. There’s more to this than you may first think. For one thing, it’s actually a very active pose. Stand up straight and keep your feet flat on the floor, with both your hands hanging down. Now, tuck in your tailbone slightly, and roll your shoulders back. As you’re doing, you’ll feel your chest move forward and open. This feeling is actually your lungs opening up to their max capacity. Finally, pull your chin up so that your ears are above your shoulders. Holding this yoga pose puts you at the best alignment for your body, improving your spine from your moments of poor posture. Hold straight and breathe.

Virasna, Hero Pose

If you want to improve your posture while binge watching your favorite show at the same time, try this yoga pose! It’s a seated position where you sit on your heels and sit up straight, the top of your head should be facing upward. Be conscious of your head reaching up tall, and for the extra effort, inhale while pulling your chest up at the same time. You should feel your spine straighten up as you exhale, much like the mountain pose, this exercise works to actively improve the alignment of your back, bettering your posture. A small warning, if you have issues with your knees, then this might not be a good yoga pose for you.

Salabhasana, Locust Pose

Not only is this yoga pose fun to say out loud, it also lets you feel like superman. Lie flat with your chest on the floor, and stretch both of your arms out in front of you. Now open your chest, and lift both your arms and legs off of the floor, the center of your body should stay grounded. Keep your fingers and toes stretched out, and you will feel a pull in your spine, strengthening the muscles along it. This is the most intense and involved yoga pose of the three listed, but with regular practice and good habits, it will do much to not only improve your posture but the health of your spine.

Of course, as you do these exercises, it’s important to be aware of your posture when you’re outside of Yoga time as well. Simple thought exercises like being aware of how you are sitting, or looking at your phone, will give you a better idea of how you treat your body.
