Minimally Invasive Lumbar Discectomy

Minimally Invasive Lumbar Discectomy is a common spine surgery procedure aimed to provide pain or weakness relief a patient may be experiencing in their lower back, hips, buttocks and legs due to herniated discs in their lumbar spine. This procedure involves the surgeon making a very small incision over the damaged area and removing a small portion of bone or disc material that impinges on the spinal nerves to decompress the spinal nerve at one of more levels of the low back and give it space to heal.

Are you a candidate for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

Many patients come to the Spine Institute seeking Dr. Marc Cohen’s expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Cohen is highly trained and skilled to perform all of his procedures with a minimally invasive or less invasive approach making him one of the top spine surgeons in New Jersey and the surrounding areas.

These procedures will not always be deemed appropriate for every patient. Some deciding factors considered in this decision-making process are a patient’s diagnosed spinal conditions, age, exhausted conservative treatments, and more. During an evaluation, Dr. Cohen provides each patient with personalized care and can determine whether you are a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery or if a traditional, open spine approach will be more effective.

If surgery is not deemed to be necessary at the time of your consultation, Dr. Cohen will work with you to offer other conservative options that may be effective in relieving your pain. We will strive to deliver the permanent pain relief you need.

A Message from Dr. Cohen

“Spine surgery remains one of the most intriguing, complex and challenging fields. I have been performing this type of surgery for more than 30 years, focusing on conventional spine procedures and minimally invasive surgery. Besides the technical challenges of surgery, the clinical challenges of making the right diagnosis are very appealing to me. I carefully evaluate the problem, determine the pathology and access the complexity of the condition. The decision to consider spine surgery should always come after trying non-surgical or conservative options. However, when the pain is persistent and clearly related to an anatomical problem, then surgery is a reasonable option.

At my practice you will be matched with a patient advocate who will act as a medical concierge, guiding you through paperwork, preliminary testing and any healthcare requirements that are needed at each step of the surgical process. My level of specialty training at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as well as my focus on the spine has contributed to my enhancement and surgical technique, which in turn, has led to an overall improved success rate in patient outcomes.

The right treatment plan begins with the right diagnosis. My patients can rely on precise clinical evaluation combined with state-of-the-art surgery. This provides patients with the peace of mind that they are receiving the best possible care and therefore better outcomes.”
